A majority of states that have announced their refusal to take Syrian refugees also sued President Obama over executive orders he took to protect undocumented immigrants in the US.
21 of the states that sued President Obama over his executive orders to protect immigrants from deportation have announced their refusal to take in Syrian refugees.
Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia, states that sued Obama over immigration executive orders, do not have a process to take in refugees.
All of this comes after terrorists attacks in Beirut, Lebanon and Paris, France last week.
It is worthy to note that states cannot refuse refugees because the US Constitution says so. Though, these governors can make it difficult for the Federal Government to place New Americans in these states.
A number of states, though, have said that they will take in refugees. CNN reports that these are the states that have said they will take Syrian refugees: Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington. I add Minnesota to the list because Governor Mark Dayton has publicly stated that MN will also take Syrian refugees.
Growing governor anti-refugee fears challenged are now even challenged by former Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice: "What the United States has done is to be open to people who are fleeing tyranny, who are fleeing danger, but we have done it in a very careful way that has worked for us."
There has also been another interesting link to history: In 1938, 67% of Americans wanted to keep mainly Jews and other political refugees out of US territory. Just 5% of Americans said US immigration quota should be raised so refugees could come to the US.
